Welcome to Central.

Our Mission Statement:
Build Community.  Do Justice.  Make Peace.

We are followers of Jesus Christ. We gather to worship God, seek justice, work for peace and celebrate God’s presence in the splendor of Creation

We live and teach an enduring faith, preparing disciples of Christ to serve God's purposes in the world. We serve so all people can live with hope, dignity and joy.

Reconciling in Christ

In response to the call in Romans 15:7 to "welcome one another therefore as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God,” we, the members of Central, join hands with all our sisters and brothers grateful for the unique gifts that each of us has to offer, regardless of race, age, gender identity, marital status, physical and mental abilities, sexual orientation, national origin, or economic status. We celebrate together both the diversity of God’s family and our unity as God’s people.

Christian

We are a Lutheran Christian church with liturgical roots grounded in our Scripture.  We baptize, serve communion, preach, and work alongside one another and our community.  We welcome all people to walk with us in faith.

ELCA

We are members of the Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. We honor our heritage creatively to meet 21st century challenges. We proudly proclaim that we are justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Kid-Friendly
We include kids in worship whenever possible. The pastor gives a kids’ message every week. At the end of every service, we invite kids to play percussion instruments (shakers, small drums) while we sing a lively closing song. Kids eagerly look forward to this! It’s a great way to close the service and move to coffee hour.

Active Music
Music at Central tends toward celebration. It includes new American hymns; songs from churches in Africa, Asia, Latin America; Spirituals from African-American tradition and the Euro-American gospel tradition; and hymns from the European Christian heritage.

Inclusive Language
Language for worship at Central tends to be gender-inclusive for humans and for God. We worship a God who is loving, just, and includes all people equally in one new humanity in Christ.

Come to God's Table
Communion is open to everyone, including young children. Children may take communion as soon as their parents feel they are ready. You get a bit of bread to dip in a cup of wine or grape juice. Anyone may receive a blessing instead of taking communion as they wish.

From Pastor Amanda
and the Central Lutheran congregation

Grace and Peace to you!

Thank you for coming and checking out our online world here at Central Lutheran. We are a progressive, inclusive, Christian community that lives out our faith in a grace-based manner. What does this mean? Well - we're an active group of people doing lots of things in our community because we believe it's what we get to do because of God's love for us and our world.

If you're looking for a book group, we've got one. Looking for a place to explore your passion for social justice and care for our world's creation? We have a group for you. Seeking an informal choir to blend your voice with? We would love to welcome you. Desire to delve into heady theological questions of where your belief intersects your daily life? We're ready for the questions and eager to walk alongside you. Craving a place of peace and prayer in the hectic schedule of life? Come and see.

Whether you have grown up with a faith or have had no religious background at all - you are welcome here. Please join us on Sunday mornings at 10:15 for our worship service; contact us with your questions by phone (503-284-2331) or email me at pastor@centralportland.org; find a committee meeting to check out . . . the doors are open and we look forward to welcoming you among us.

Carry on in joy,
Pr. Amanda Zentz-Alo
