After the second World War, the members of Central
Lutheran Church realized it needed a larger building to meet
the needs of their growing congregation. After lengthly reflection
and discussion, the members decided to stay in Portland, on
the East side of the Willamette River, as close to the city
center as possible. The members commited to remain "in
the city for good." With a historical and innovative design
by renowned architect, Pietro Belluschi, and after an extensive
and dedicated fund drive, the "new Central," was dedicated
in 1949, the cornerstone laid in 1950. Distinctive to the design
of the new building were soaring laminated wooden arches in
the nave, inlaid crosses in the curved brick section of the
exterior, and a wooden cross rising to the top of an open tower.
The 50 foot "bell tower" became a symbol of strength
and commitment to the community by the congregation.
In 2005, the "bell tower" in extreme
decay, was removed for safety's sake. Members of the congregation
worked with the city of Portland, and with architects trained
by Piertro Belluschi to redesign a new tower that meets current
safety codes and remains true to Belluschi's vision and design.
Restoring the tower, a symbol of worship and service at Central,
not only meets the needs of Central but also the community.
Located in Historic Irvington District, Central Lutheran Church's
historic building provides a venue for many public and community
events, including Young at Heart for seniors, Music Together
and the Northeast Indoor Park for children, the Disablility
Arts and Culture Project, and a Sing-Along Handels' Messiah.
Restoring the tower and raising the cross is a commitment
that Central is here for the community.
A recent article in the Oregonian
gives more information about a history of Central written by
Margaret Moilien, and working with the City of Portland to rebuild
the tower
A fund drive to "Lift High the
Cross" is currently in progress to raise
the $250,000 needed to rebuild the tower and renovate our historic,
and aging, building.
