Worship Assistants
at Central Lutheran Church
The act of liturgy is the people's
work. As Christ's
body, we know that everyone has a place, a responsibility, an
opportunity to serve. Here are the ways we serve in worship.
The Presider gathers the community
around the
table and gives thanks to God on their behalf. They break the
bread and prepare the cup for Holy Communion. They are charged
with interpreting scripture through preaching and proclamation.
In our tradition, the Presider is a pastor who has been called
and ordained to this ministry - our pastor, the Rev. Brian Brandt,
is our community's Presider.
The Assisting Minister "manages
the house",
making sure all the worship assistants are present and fulfilling
their duties. They offer prayers on behalf of the people, announce
hymns and songs, and formally dismiss the congregation to their
mission and ministry at the conclusion of worship.
Cantors are singers of
all ages who
help lead the church's song. They teach new music to the congregation,
and lead and support the singing of the community.
Communion Assistants assist with the bread
and wine, serving communion to the congregation, inviting everyone
to the table.
The Lector is charged with reading the assigned
scripture readings to the assembly. The lector is any baptized
member of the congregation.
Ushers welcome the community and provide for
their needs in the sanctuary. They collect the offering, assist
latecomers, and care for those with mobility issues.
Altar Care Assistants bake the bread and prepare
the wine for Holy Communion. They provide for the needs of baptismal
candidates at the time of Holy Baptism.
Acolytes are children grades 4-6. They
light and extinguish the candles, help collect the offering,
and participate as communion assistants during Holy Communion.
Our community trains twice a year to learn new skills, to update
familiar ones, and to continue enriching our common worship life.
